The S54 engine is legendary for its rev happy nature and power. BMW chose to use solid lifters instead of hydraulic lifters to improve drivetrain durability and reliability at high engine speeds. However, the one downside to this setup is it requires valve lash adjustments every 30,000 miles and failure to do so can result in performance problems and engine damage in extreme cases.
