The S54 engine is known for many things. One of it's downfalls was early production E46 M3 rod bearing failures due to mis-manufactured bearings by BMW's supplier. While BMW addressed these issues on early production S54 engines, there are still circumstances in which replacing rod bearings is required on later production S54 engines. This kit includes everything you will need to do the job.
This kit is intended for later production engines or engines with updated OE rod bearings that use M10x1.25 E12 torx bolts. In this application, the connecting rod bolts must be replaced (included in the kit) and the following torquing sequence must be followed:
First sequence:
1) Jointing torque - 5 Nm (~4 ft lbs)
2) Setting torque - 20 Nm (~15 ft lbs)
3) Angle of rotation - 105 ° in single stroke
4) Back off bolt approximately one turn and then re tighten again in second sequence
Second sequence:
1) Jointing torque - 5 Nm (~4 ft lbs)
2) Setting torque - 20 Nm (~15 ft lbs)
3) Angle of rotation - 105 ° in single stroke
4) Back off bolt approximately one turn and then re-tighten again in third sequence
Third sequence:
1) Jointing torque - 5 Nm (~4 ft lbs)
2) Setting torque - 20 Nm (~15 ft lbs)
3) Angle of rotation - 105 ° in single stroke
Please note: Also inspect the front of your S54's oil pump housing. Some vehicles have had the oil pump chain come into contact with the housing and start removing material as a result. If this has occurred it would also be a good idea to replace the oil pump and oil pump chain/tensioner.
